We assessed the content of each article by (1) identifying
the number of goals addressed, (2) recording
the exact phrasing of each goal, and (3) categorizing
the type of each goal. Our data extraction template
began with a provisional list of 10 goal categories
based on our assessment of published expert
opinion7,8,22 as follows: (1) cure, (2) live longer,
(3) improve function, (4) improve quality of life,
(5) slow the process of decline, (6) provide comfort
care/palliation/relieve suffering, (7) accomplish
something particular, (8) support for family, (9)
preserve independence/autonomy/control, and (10)
other. Two investigators (LAS, AEC) used these 10
categories to analyze the first 30 articles, adding goal
categories and modifying category names as additional
goals were identified.
