One Thousand and One Nights is often known in English as the Arabian Nights. It is a collection of West and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. The Islamic Golden Age refers to the period in Islam's history during the Middle Ages when much of the Muslim world was ruled by various caliphates, experiencing a scientific, economic, and cultural flourishing. The history of the Nights is extremely complex. These tales were translated into Arabic under the title Alf Layla, or 'The Thousand Nights.
The work was collected over many centuries by various authors, translators and scholars.
