This study includeda series of elderly subjects (n = 24; mean age: 75.5 ± 7.4;13 females) diagnosed according to the DSM-IV criteria withmajor depression with mild to moderate severity.14,15Eachparticipant received information about this study in writingand an individual verbal explanation of this study from theresearcher. Participation was entirely voluntary. Individualparticipants in this study gave written informed consent anda signed declaration of consent. This study was conductedaccording to the principles expressed in the Declarationof Helsinki and was approved by the ‘‘Science of Aging’’Interdepartmental Research Center of Sapienza Universityof Rome. We evaluated the concurrent conditions throughthe Cumulative Illness Rating Score (CIRS) and its Comor-bidity Index (CInd).16The main diseases found in the testgroup were: hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, car-bohydrate intolerance, dyslipidemia. Consistency with thefollowing criteria of inclusion was assessed for each patient:diagnosis of light to moderate depression, with a GeriatricDepression Scale (GDS) score between 5 and 12; absence ofpharmacological treatment. Patients suffering from severedepression, or for whom physical exercise was not rec-ommended (blood pressure — SBP — >200 mmHg and/ordiastolic blood pressure — DBP — >110 mmHg; diabeticsubjects with fasting blood glucose — FBG — >250 mg/dl;unstable angina pectoris; arrhythmias; severe heart valves diseases; aneurysms; any kind of severe systemic diseases),were excluded.
