1. INTRODUCTION
The outcome of this paper is to start a discussion on the merits of
using a flipped classroom for IT courses. As IT and STEM
educators we need to be aware of how to use technology to
enhance student learning and support delivery of classroom
material. One of the original methods of using technology is the
blended or hybrid classroom. The concept of blended learning
involves a student learning ,in part, through online delivery of
content and instruction. This methodology also gives students
some control over their time, effort, location and pace of delivery.
The blended classroom also uses the traditional method of face-toface
classroom participation. [1] The Sloan Consortium defines
hybrid courses as those that “integrate online with traditional faceto-
face class activities in a planned, pedagogically valuable
manner. [2] Part of the difficulty in the blended classroom is that
most educators just use the technology to assist in the regular
classroom lecture format. The technology is used primarily for
reinforcement or drilling of material. Educators don’t consider
how this methodology can be used in a different way to enhance
