Concerning Dedobbeleer and German’s
(1987), model on construction workers’ safety
practices under predisposing factors, as stated
above, divers perceived that they were susceptible
to injury. Knowledge of safety practices was
assessed using a knowledge index. With a considerable
number of divers engaging in three or
more of the six measured practices, it can be assumed
that there is some knowledge of safe practices
among the population. Addressing control
over one’s own safety, of the three hazards presented
as the most important, divers felt they had
the most control over the hazard of a failure of
the air supply (just under 80% felt something
could be done), although a number of divers felt
that the hazard was caused by the carelessness of
others.
