I'll have you!' Shouted the young man, and was saved from drowning. And that is how Hetty came to work in the Biggest Department Store for $8 a week. The story of Hetty's leaving ia almost the same. In each department of the store there is an all knowing person with a note-book and a red tie. He is called a 'buyer', and he is in charge of the girls in his department. This buyer was walking through his department. He felt like a man who was drowning in a sea of beautiful yellow-haired shop-girls. So he looked on Hetty Pepper's simple face, sharp green eyes and ordinary-coloured hair wiht pleasure. In a quiet corner, he tried to kiss her. She knocked him three feet away with one blow of her strong, rough hand. So now you know why Hetty Pepper had to leave the Biggest Store at half an hour's notice, with only fifteen cents in her purse. Beef, at the time of out story, usually cost six cents a pound. But on the day Hetty left the Biggest Store, the price was 7 1/2 cents. This is what our story is all about. Hetty climbed with her fifteen cents worth of beef to her $3.50 third floor back room. 'A good hot beef stew for supper, and a good night's sleep,' she thought, 'and I'll be ready to start looking for work again in the morning.'
