It’s important that everyone be given a choice when it comes to receiving unsolicited sales and marketing calls. Canada respects this fact, and the government has enacted the National DNCL and related laws to allow citizens to easily make that choice.
By registering on Canada’s DNCL, or National Do Not Call List, you can reduce the number of unwanted incoming calls considerably.
Telemarketers in Canada are required to register with the DNCL, access the list, and cross-reference it for prohibited numbers before making any unsolicited calls. It falls upon these companies to stay true to the law, and if you continue to receive sales calls after registering your number, you may file a complaint directly with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Division.
It’s important to note that certain types of calls are still permitted under the DNCL rules. These calls include calls from registered charities, political parties and candidates, market researchers and pollsters, and business-to-business calls. You will also still receive calls from debt collectors if applicable.
Registration is fast and easy on the Canadian Do Not Call List’s website. Simply enter your phone number and follow a few steps to begin the process. Remember that telemarketers have 31 days to update their lists, so you may continue to receive calls during that time.
After your number is registered, you may also cut down on the number of incoming calls from permitted callers by asking them to add you to their own Do Not Call lists.
