There are about 175 natural protected areas (NPAs) in Russia: 100 strictly protected reserves known as zapovedniks, 35 national parks and 40 nature parks. Until 1983, zapovedniks were devoted only to conservation and scientific research, but during the past two decades they have also been forced to open to limited eco- tourism because of severe funding shortfalls (Chizhova, 2000)
