Second, scale is created through the flows and interactions that occur in
the political economy and society, and thus there is nothing inevitable
about the rise of ‘global scale’ phenomena which result from the
action of agents. For example, as we will see in Chapter 3, colonial
globalization was constructed based on notions of Western supremacy.
Arguably, similar forces underpin the latest phase of globalization.
In short, echoing an earlier point, the scale of the global and thus the
rise of globalization are human constructs.
