The costume was designed by Colleen Atwood, who has also created costumes for the DC Comics TV series "Arrow" and "The Flash."
"In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today," said Atwood in a statement.
Atwood won Oscars for Best Achievement in Costume Design in "Alice in Wonderland," "Memoirs of Geisha" and "Chicago."
The costume for the CBS' incarnation features a dark blue jersey with the famous "S" emblazoned on it, along with a deep-red skirt. And as Entertainment Weekly pointed out, it seems that the costume has the same texture with that of Henry Cavill's attire in "Man of Steel."
The costume also covers most of Benoist's skin, as her boots go above her knees and she appears to be wearing stockings underneath. Plus, unlike in the comics, the "Whiplash" breakout star isn't showing off her bare midriff.
