Time-trend data over the past three to four decades have shown a close parallel between the rise in added sugar intake and the obesity and diabetes epidemics in the United States. National survey data estimated that per capita intake of added sugars increased from 235 kcal/day in the late 1970s to 318 kcal/day in 1995; and HFCS, the primary sweetener used to flavor SSBs, increased from 80 to 132 kcal/day over the same time period .
