KUALA LUMPUR — Two Malaysians were sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday after pleading guilty to attempting to join Islamic State militants in the Middle East, a prosecutor said.
Mohamad Shafrein Rasid and Mohamad Yusoffe Ishak, both 27, were arrested last year in Kuala Lumpur after they tried to board an Istanbul-bound flight on their way to Syria, according to deputy prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin.
Police said nearly 100 Malaysian citizens have gone to Syria and Iraq to fight in the radical Islamist movement.
Dozens more Malaysians have been charged in court since last year for attempting to support the militants.
