Let us return to a question raised implicitly throughout this chapter:
Does organizational domination occur by default or by design? A conspiracy theory tends to imply the latter, suggesting that the process of
domination in society is rooted in some callous structure of motivation or
in a con5cious policy of exploitation. However, this is not necessarily the
case. For example, if we return and consider the ideas discussed in
Chapter 8, it is easy to see that domination may be encoded in the logics
of change through which social life is unfolding: Organizational actions
that promote structured inequalities, industrial accidents, occupational
disease, environmental pollution, or exploitation in the Third World may
all result from the way systemic forces dictate that business be done. In
this regard it is important to note that many of the pathologies explored
in this chapter are found on both sides of the political spectrum. The fall
of the Berlin Wall has shown that Eastern communism, like Western capitalism, has excelled at producing systems of corporate domination!
