Sarah came home at five-thirty. She found Macon standing in the kitchen with a cup of coffee. They went to inspect the new couch together, and practiced pulling it out to turn it into a bed. It made Macon think of Muriel’s house, reminding him of all the times Muriel’s sister had slept over on the couch in the living room. They had been invited by some neighbors for supper, and as they were getting dressed, Sarah said, ‘Macon, you never asked me if I slept with anyone while we were separated.’
