Overview of Study
Within this ERNIe, or error analysis process, the students will correct any
errors they may have made within a formal assessment (primarily selected weekly
quizzes) as well as address the reason(s) why they think they missed a particular problem
and what they have done differently in their corrected version of the problem. The ERNIe
process will be discussed more in-depth in Chapter 3. Figure 1.1 is an example of the
ERNIe process, as demonstrated by a participant from the dissertation pilot study in
March 2005. Problems #9 and #10 are original problems from a Geometry quiz about
similar figures. What follows is the participant’s ERNIe, or written error analysis (only
problem #10 is shown here), with a translation provided below, for clarity. The
participant was asked to correct the problem and explain why he thought that he missed
the original problem.
