BANGKOK -- Japanese culture seems to be making some inroads in Thailand, where Japan-themed movies and TV shows are making their mark.
"Kol Kimono" is a popular TV drama set in Japan. Partially shot in northern Kyushu, the archipelago's southernmost main island, it introduces Japan's natural beauty as well as castles and other historical buildings to an audience for whom Japan has become a favorite holiday destination.
"Traditional Japanese houses and gardens in the drama are really beautiful," a 40-year-old government worker said. "Seeing them makes me want to visit Japan."
She is among the growing number of devoted fans of "Kol Kimono," which began airing April 19. Watching the show, broadcast Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 p.m. to 10:45 p.m., is now her favorite pastime.
The drama tells the story of two Japanese lovers who lived some 400 years ago. Their love ended in tragedy, but the two, reincarnated in modern day Japan, have finally fulfilled their love. The story is based on a Thai novel that was a huge hit early last year.
