Unless harvested at periodic intervals, the decomposing plants contribute to the eutrophication of water bodies. However, the rate of pollutant removal is faster than the contribution by decomposition. Whilst studies on the effect of this plant on the oxygen exchange in water, on the harbouring of pathogenic organisms in the root system and as a possible tertiary treatment system when introduced into waste water treatment units are in progress, the present study indicates a beneficial use in environmental sanitation and byproduct utilisation.
