After much discussion and debate, the task force decided the level of nursing education, and work unit schedule met the principles as the only criteria to differentiate salary. The model recognized the educa- (AD/Dip) tion levels of associate degree or diploma and bachelor's degree with a major in nursing (BSN/ BAN). Task force members identified the work unit's hours of operation and not an individual RN's schedule as the differentiator for 3 types of schedules. Using the schedule of the work unit supported the value that staff are responsible to meet the needs of the patients they serve, regardless of their regu- lar work schedule. With criteria established, the model recognized the following work unit schedules: Monday through Friday day hours, 24/7 hours of operation, and extended hours that included sched ules between days only and 247. The extended hours category included work units with day and evening hours and some weekend and holiday shifts.
