What is Culture?
There are many definitions of culture in dictionaries, on the internet and in resource
books. Some aspects emerge that are common to all of them. Culture is a human
phenomenon and is common to a group of people. It is transmitted by one generation
and learned by the next through observation, rules and guidelines. Geert Hofstede, an
international authority on cross-cultural social psychology, says “every person carries
within him or herself patterns of thinking, feeling and potential acting which were learned
throughout their lifetime”.1 He defines culture as the software of the mind.
