A test facility in Rokko island operated by Kansai Electric Power Company has 100 two-kilowatt PV systems installed and operating on simulated residences and connected to a simulated utility distribution network. The Akagi test facility has a solar simulator and distribution line simulator where power conversion units are extensively tested. It also has a battery cycling test facility. Saijo one MW power plant is operated by a consortium of nine Japanese electric utilities. Single and polycrystalline modules from six Japanese suppliers are installed at this facility. The objective of this project is to demonstrate the capabilities of PV and to document long-term O&M costs. Two 400-kW and one 200-kW inverters were installed for interconnected operation with the Shikoku Electric Power Company.
