Let me start by saying I booked the Mazi on the strength of previous reviews and I so wish I hadn't.

The positive features first. The room we had was modern, well laid out with good storage space, good lighting and a fridge. However it was not as clean as it should have been and I'll come back to that point later.

The room we had was 604. It also had a small balcony, which we couldn't use as it is directly above a canal that has raw sewage running into it. The smell made us gag and sadly it permeated the room. 604 also has 'air conditioning' but our unit was either leaking water, frozen or as much use for keeping the room cool as an asthmatic pensioner with a cough.

The room wasn't ever cleaned properly during our 8 day stay. On arrival I lifted the toilet seat to find little bits of poop under the seat - nice! We had to ask them to change the bed sheets and towels, something you expect to be down daily in a hotel.

The lift was also filthy and its carpet full of bits or dirt, the lift handles and its window were streaked with finger prints and marks were not cleaned during our stay. It was a real shame as whoever has designed the refit of this hotel (it's not a new hotel just a refit of one called paradise - according to the people in the 7/11 next door) has done a great job. From the pictures you'll have viewed and on first impressions the Mazi looks like a funky hotel. Sadly the only thing funky about it is the smell from the canal.

The pool area is tiny and never gets the sun. The gym has a treadmill, a bench, an elliptical trainer and some tiny Dumbbells, the heaviest being 10 kgs. I have more equipment than that in my garage and I don't call it a gym. Hate when hotels say the have a gym and that's all they give you.

For those of you who like a work out, on holiday or not, and find yourself in pa tong then I strongly recommend the Yorkshire hotel. Great hotel, lovely gym, sunny pool, fabulous food and warm, friendly staff.

As for the staff on the front desk of the Mazi Hotel, hats off to Milk who was very good and always helpful. As for the rest - simply not good enough when compared to Milk and the staff in the other hotels we visited during our travels around Thailand.

As for the location. It's quiet and not 5 minutes from Bangala Road, as some reviewers have said. It's more like 20 minutes depending on the human traffic that dawdles along the road being harassed every five steps by tuk/tuk drivers, tailors, happy ending massage parlours and the like. Standard for pa tong but because of this and the sheer volume of tourists it's a 20 minute walk to the action day or night.

Overall I wish we hadn't stayed at the Mazi Hotel and stayed at the Yorkshire hotel instead.

However if you like smelly, dirty rooms with surly staff, an appalling breakfast (you can get a great breakfast near the hotel for £2 in the restaurants near by), a dark cold pool, a gym (lol) and all right next to a river of raw sewage then the Mazi Hotel is for you.
