Browsers can render text and image without help, but require additional software to cope with other media such as QuickTime video or Flash animations. This extra help is provided via browser ‘plug-in’ –add –on software that extend the browser’s capabilities. Plug-ins are either provided as part of the standard browser package, installed along with purchased applications, or can be found on magazine cover discs or downloaded from software manufacturer’s websites. Most are free, because manufacturers want their technologies to become as widely used as possible. Popular plug-in include macromedia Flash and shockwave (for interactive animated content), RealPlayer (for video and audio clips), and Apple QuickTime (for a variety of video and audio content).
