In May 2000, a sea star “round-up”

In May 2000, a sea star “round-up” was organized in the Derwent River
(Tasmania, Australia), in which more than 20,000 northern Pacific sea stars
(Asterias amurensis) were collected by 200 volunteers over a two day period
(Anon., 2000). Sea stars were collected for the most part by divers; however,
there were also four snorkellers who collected approximately 1,000 sea stars. As
a way of measuring the success of the “round-up”, the sites were monitored
before, after and 2 months after the sea star “round-up”. Results indicated that
the “round-up” was successful in decreasing sea star populations by
approximately 6.5% to 29.9% from the three sites. However, it was suggested
that this amount is not likely to make a big impact on total sea star densities.
Furthermore, collection by hand is extremely labour intensive (Anon., 1999).
