Most teachers agree that prescriptive grammar is not justified (Guidelines, n.d.). Many students who despise grammar were taught grammar in a systematic way (Ayoob, 1999). "It is important to teach grammar in a way that students will find interesting and useful" (Ayoob, 1999, p. 3). "In essence grammatically standard language was created so that people would learn the same language and be easier to govern. If people do not understand what you are saying, then their communication cannot be ruled" (Ayoob, 1999, p. 4). Isolated teaching of skills wasn't working with students, so some teachers chose to abandon the teaching of grammar altogether (Hoffman, 2006).The alternative to prescriptive grammar teaching was descriptive grammar teaching (sometimes called transformational grammar), where grammar is matched to the purpose of the user (Christy, n.d.). This new type of grammar was less rigid, when it came to rules. Its guiding principle was that grammar is best learned in the context of reading, writing, and speaking (Hoffman, 2006).The National Council of Teachers of English took the following official stand on teaching grammar :
