The age of globalization and modern technologies are bringing diverse worlds closer
together as it is making information is available to most individuals on a regular basis.
Furthermore, people around the world are impacted by similar forces and new inventions.
Consequently, this study compared new data collected from managers in an international
banking firm in ten Asian-Pacific countries on cultural values to those reported by Hofstede in
1980. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were relative changes in work-related
cultural values for countries at two time periods.
The results suggest that there have been some significant shifts in work-related cultural
value in East Asian countries since Hofstede originally reported his results. Several countries showed a shift in ranking when compared with Hofstede’s original data. Furthermore, these
results do not support the assumption that values are stable over time. Therefore, a nation's workrelated
values are subject to change over the years. So, managers and researchers should think
about the characteristics of cultures when they attempt to use work-related values to understand
human behavior in organizations.
