When you buy into the Apple experie

When you buy into the Apple experience, you really do embrace it fully. This means you grant them the right to dictate what apps are available to you and decide to live with whatever features are provided for you on the device of your choice.

Is this a bad thing? Only if you want more control over your device than Apple allows. While you can Jailbreak some iPhone models, I haven't noticed that this really adds anything to the sense of freedom that one might expect.

In fact, I think a Jailbroken device is more at risk than is worth the effort.

Living in a walled garden with Apple can be a boon for those that want the oversight and protection that comes with the brand. Apple is very careful in ensuring not only a consistent user experience, but the percentage of applications that might cause harm to the user (stolen info or credentials) is extremely low.

Android on the other hand has a more open approach to the user, its applications and what can be designed to run on the device. I have in the past completely changed the Android version running my handset on a whim. This encompassed features, interface and the entire experience. In essence, I held in my hand a phone that was Android - But nothing like what I was used to.

Also in regards to applications, there was a time that Google allowed developers almost free reign in design and population of their Applications Market. As a result, it behaved quite like an old Wild West town - Really couldn't trust anyone to not try to take you for what you own and hold dear. Since the redesign of the its Market now called Google Play, there are tighter controls in place to try and safe guard the users more and ensure that malicious applications are harder to upload for distribution and easier to remove from 'infected' devices.

I prefer Android over Apple. This is largely due to my investment in Google through several phones, tablets, Chromecast Unit and a Chromebook. If I had started out with Apple however, there would be a good chance that living on the other side of the fence would have appealed to me. I know Apple is a well built and successful brand, however it is hard to over look the cost factor when I have two kids, a mortgage and a host of other bills.
