On December 7, 2007, a crane barge being towed by a tug collided with an anchored crude oil carrier, the Hebei Spirit, carrying 260,000 tonnes of crude oil. The incident occurred near the port of Daesan on the Yellow Sea coast of Taean County in Korea. The impact punctured three of the five tanks on the ship and resulted in the leaking of some 10,800 tonnes of oil (Wikipedia, 2010a). The spill occurred near Mallipo Beach in Taean County. The region affected by the accident is one of Asia’s largest marshland areas used by migratory birds, and also contains a national marine park and 445 sea farms (Wikipedia, 2010b). This oil spill was about one-third of the size of the Exxon Valdez oil spill (Wikipedia, 2010b).
