In the period 2000-2012 an accelerated rise in the government public debt was registered. This reached 226.8
bn lei (equivalent of 50.9 bn euro) by the end of the year2012, representing 38.6% of the GDP, comparatively with
about 25 bn lei (equivalent of about 8 bn euro) in the year 2000 when it represented only 16.7% of GDP (MPF,
2013). We mention that, if we add the local debt of about 14 bn lei to the government debt at the end of the year
2012, the total public debt of 240.8 bn lei represented 41% of the GDP
