Job Advertisement
After you have found a job advertisement you should study it carefully to see if it suits you. Don’t apply just because it sounds fun, or the salary is good.
Common parts of a job advertisement.
• A summary gives brief general information about the job such as:
- Full time (work about 40 hours a week) / Part time (work less than 40 hours a week)
- Temporary (work for a short time) / Permanent (will work until quit or fired)
- Salary negotiable (sometimes it depends on your experience and education)
- Entry level (no experience. Simple tasks) / Middle level (some experience and more leadership experience)/ Senior level (very experienced and usually a management position)
• A brief description about the company
• Job Descriptions/ Job Details/ Job Functions
- Outlines the types of things you will be required to do.
- Gives you an idea of what the job will be like.
• Key Responsibilities/ Key Accountabilities
- Similar to job description. Explains the tasks you will be responsible for.
• Qualifications/ Minimum Qualifications
- This is what you need to do this job. This should include skills, education, and experience.
• ‘Nice to have’ or ‘Preferred’ section
- Sometimes included to inform people what is the ideal employee. Usually companies post the minimum qualifications but want more.
• Location / Contact Details
- This is for you to know where the job position is and how you should apply. Usually applications and CVs are sent online.
The qualifications is very important and you should understand this part well. How closely does the list match up with the experience you have? You may want to think of how your experience falls in line with the qualifications the company is seeking.
If there are any qualifications he does not meet don’t be discourage. Try to think of a way that can be viewed as a positive: you will not need to be trained out of bad habits; you are a quick learner; etc.
Finally, follow the guidelines of how to apply very closely. If you apply incorrectly employers will not even look at your CV.
