Oil of turmeric and its ether and chloroform extracts have proved to
be antifungal, anti-protozoan, antiviral, and antibacterial
(Chattopadhyaya et al. 2004). In a screening for antibiotic property,
turmeric showed broad-spectrum antibacterial activity (Omoloso
and Vagi, 2001). Turmeric oil obtained as a by-product from
curcumin manufacture was subjected to antibacterial study and
found effective against Bacillus cereus, Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus
subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas
aeruginosa. (Negi et al. 1999).
