Some applications, such as unicast streaming, allow selection and switching of streams to address the needs for bitrate and picture size scaling. Simulcast of multiple bitstream versions can be employed for similar purposes for broadcast and
multicast applications. Transcoding is yet another alternative for bitstream adaptation to prevailing network conditions and
receiver capabilities. However, scalable video coding would often be beneficial for straightforward bitstream adaptation,
with lower storage space, transmission bandwidth and/or computing capability requirements.
