They are studious, quiet and polite. They seem nervous when questions are put to them directly, and reluctant to engage in open discussions. They are not used to giving opinions or making an argument in public, perhaps keeping their critical thinking private. They are reluctant to ask questions; perhaps afraid of making a fool of themselves. They are unsettled and uncomfortable when their lecturers address them by their first name. They hardly question their seniors, let alone challenge them. To do so is considered disrespectful. Such behaviours fit the cultural norms of a society where students are expected to show their teachers a level of respect on with that shown to their parents. (Vu, 2011, pp. 156-157).
