European Cities Have Pollution Too
PARIS,AFP - EUROPE'S major cities all suffer to some extent from air pollution, and are trying different remedies.
Athens and Milan are the worst, with traffic exhaust fumes seen as the main cause.
Athens, the Greek capital,is probably as bad as Bangkok. It has a high population density, 60 percent of the country's industries, and 1.2 million vehicles,in a valley with few green spaces. Pollution is blamed for 100 deaths a year.
Last week, central Athens was once again closed to private car as pollution levels broke safety limit. The city has had alternate driving days since 1982, and two underground train lines are planned for 1998.
Last year, the city authorities, built vast underground garages encouraged drivers to use cleaner fuel and planted lots of green bushes and trees. In summer months, working hours are staggered.
All of Italy's big cities and surrounding suburbs suffer from pollution caused by car, and Milan in north has the highest levels of nitrogen dioxide in Europe.
Which of the following is done recently to solve the pollution problem
alternate driving day
vast underground garage
some areas were closed to private car
working hours are staggered
