The advantage of the procedure described in this paper is that it is applied to an already existing radiation code whose reliability may already be well tested and a relatively small amount of development effort was required to achieve the speedup. In principal this procedure should be applicable to other more intensive and widely used radiation transport code such as Moderate Resolution Atmospheric Transmission (MODTRAN) and Line-by-Line Radiation Transport Model (LBLRTM). The amount of parallelism within a single instance will depend on the details of the transport model but in all cases parallelism across multiple instances will be fully achievable, and any already existing simulation, such as OSSE, that uses one of these transport processes can be sped up without having to be restructured for use with a different transport model.
