Clinical features: In general any person with features of stiffness, rigidity, restricted
movements at the spine and joints, bone and joint pains and has been residing
continuously for more than 6 months in a fluorotic area is a case of skeletal fluorosis
unless proved otherwise. Dental fluorosis occurs in children who are exposed to high
intakes of fluoride before completion of dental mineralisation, i.e. 12-14 years of age.
Dental fluorosis is the clinical index of the epidemiology of fluorosis. Estimation of
fluoride in drinking water and skeletal radiographs alone are enough to confirm the
diagnosis of skeletal fluorosis.
