At the University of Melbourne, the subject Cost Management (CM) is delivered to
intermediate (second year) undergraduate students and has a historical annual enrolment
of approximately 600. Up until 1999, CM was delivered via a teaching format comprising
two one-hour lectures per week, one (one hour) tutorial, and one (one hour) optional
workshop. The workshop and tutorials primarily comprised working through a number
of paper-based exercises drawn from the textbook and other sources. Student attendance
in workshops was not compulsory and was low. Attendance in tutorials was compulsory
and student attendance and participation within tutorials accounted for 10% of the student’s
total result for the semester.
