A study conducted in Maryland by Jett and Schafer (1993) showed teachers
of English were found to have more favorable attitudes towards the high-stakes tests
than their counterparts in other subjects. Just how and why this should be true was
not explored. Certainly the English teachers at Red Bird were optimistic about their
abilities to impact the students' success. Perhaps the compilation of literature by
Ruth Mitchell for the Center for Public Education in her 2006 article says it best -
"Teachers report complicated and sometimes contradictory views of how highstakes
tests affect instruction." This certainly is an area of interest and deserving of
further research.
