Djordjevi´c, Kruˇsi´c, Kneˇzevi´c-Jugovi´c, Nedovi´c and Bugarski [20].The increased swelling ratio under acidic conditions may be due tothe protonation of the amino groups that exist on the chitosan. Poly-mer chains will have a positive change, so a pushing effect will occurand consequently swelling will be realized. It was seen that themicrocapsules dropped to the bottom when they were exposed topH 6.8, and they were stable at the end of the experiments. This canbe explained because the protonated carboxyl groups were domi-nant at the higher pH. In this situation, an osmotic pressure increasetogether with ion mobility and swelling occurred. This character-istic shows that the obtained microcapsule can be used as a drugcarrier.
