The wild elephant in several of the Sumatran provinces have caused a lot of damage to villages and plantations on the edge of the forests. Rampaging elephants in Lampung alone have killed 14 people between 1989 and 1993.
Conservationists said elephant had moved into the settled areas on Sumatra island over the past two years. This is because their habitats have been destroyed by the building of villages, plantation and timber farms.
