Woah! Is Julie Plec, the creator of ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ having second thoughts about Nina Dobrev’s exit from the series following that huge character death on ‘Grey’s Anatomy?’ It sure sounds that way!
We still don’t know how Elena (Nina Dobrev) will officially exit Vampire Diaries, but we know it’s happening and we know it’s happening soon. However, following the very controversial death of Derek (Patrick Dempsey) on Grey’s Anatomy and having now seen the backlash sent towards the creator of that series Shonda Rhimes, it seems as though TVD creator Julie Plec might be getting some cold feet! In fact, she revealed how Derek’s death has been making her rethink the way Nina is leaving the series!
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Interview: Series Creator Julie Plec
Following what might be the biggest TV death of the year on Grey’s, Julie Plec told KCRW Podcast that it’s caused her to reevaluate the way that Nina will be exiting Vampire Diaries.
“It’s really funny because watching this whole Grey’s thing now happen after the fact…” Julie said. “I’m like, ‘Mmmhmm, okay, interesting.'”
What is that supposed to mean? Beyond that admission, Julie also said that she actually tried to convince Nina not to leave the show.
“Nina had said earlier this year that she wanted to be done and we spent a little bit of time trying to talk her out of it,” Julie said. “[We’d say,] ‘Oh, look at all these great plans of how you can stay!’ And she finally was like, ‘No, I signed up for six years. I’ve done my six years. I’m ready to move on and spread my wings.'”
No Hard Feelings
However, though Julie would have liked to see Nina stay, she was sure to add that her decision to leave was completely drama-free.
“She was just looking forward to moving on with no hard feelings and no drama,” Julie said. “This is taking the personal out of it completely, from a storytelling point of view it’s a great challenge. As writers in the room we’re finding it very rejuvenating. Just on a strictly creative exercise level.”
