Talk of a global obesity epidemic reflects a steady shift in populations from lower to higher BMI categories. Estimates classify 23% of the world’s population as overweight and an additional 10% as obese. It has further been calculated that by 2030, 58% of the world’s population will be obese. Yet it is worth highlighting that this growth in BMI reflects a small movement to the right of the population distribution of BMI. In other words, what occurred in many countries was a large population of people resting on the heavy side of lower BMI categories gaining a little weight in recent years and pushing their country’s average into a new, higher BMI category.
