4. Discussion
Due to the increased evaporating resistance after application of gravel-sand mulching, the main way for water to evaporate was through water vapor diffusion. Soil evaporation in our study decreased with increasing mulch thickness, as also previously suggested by Tsutomu et al. [8]. It is possible that increasing mulch size and associated pore space changes may have also affected this. However, evaporating resistance did not increase beyond 5 cm mulch thickness. Similarly, in our study, evaporation markedly decreased with increasing mulch thickness up to 7 cm, but evaporation was slight when mulch thickness was greater than 7 cm.
