This study examined a sample of 500 high technology firms in Shanghai, the biggest city in
China. I chose high technology firms, because they are knowledge intensity firms which provide
me an appropriate setting to research on knowledge management. Data were collected through
key informants. Data were collected with the senior manager as the key informant. They were
mailed a questionnaire and a letter explaining the purpose of this study and promised offering the
research results if respondents returned the completed questionnaire. Follow-up phone calls were
made to all potential respondents who had not returned the surveys after four weeks
