Icelanders still use a mixture of both but according to this survey, American English is
dominant. The only British English term that was used more than the American English term
was football. This might be explained by the similarity of the Icelandic translation fótbolti and
by the fact that this sport is more popular, both here in Iceland and in Europe, than it is in the
United States. The English Premiership League is highly popular here in Iceland and so the
term can be heard almost every weekend in many households.
