Dr. Vipandh Roengpithya, while supporting the approval of the budget, stressed the need to clearly spell out the costs for faculty and related items such as laboratories, taking into account the current and targeted number of students, and according to the types of degrees they are pursuing.
Dr. Niwes Hemvachiravarakorn, commented on the need to overhaul the presentation and look at the big picture, adding that in accounting cash is cash, and the importance in looking at the bottom line, to see whether the actual condition of the Institute is indeed fine.
The President thanked Dr. Vipandh and Dr. Niwes for their valuable feedback, and remarked that he was serving on three Institute bodies, namely the Audit Committee, Executive Committee and Board of Trustee, and that with requests to see the financial presentation in different formats by different bodies i.e. with less or more details, the Head Finance had consulted with him on how best to prepare the presentation. In relation to the request for additional funds, the President informed the meeting that in previous years there were not enough investments made. He added that this year the Administration intends to recruit not only faculty but also three new Deans, through open recruitment from outside, with an offer of premium package, in order to attract world-class candidates. The President informed the meeting that he has only been in office for one year, and into the future planned to delegate more authority to the Vice Presidents, and would be spending more of his time going out and generating additional funds for the Institute. He further added that he shared the concerns expressed by some of the trustees, on how to make AIT more sustainable, which he assured members he was striving for.
Dr. Niwes clarified that he was not against investment, and supported the need to have funds set aside. However, he emphasized that it is better to operate and make adjustments in between the line items, of the overall budget, while keeping an eye on the bottom line, which is very important, in terms of accessing whether a particular investment is feasible or not. He advised that instead of drawing from the reserves, there could be fundraising efforts to repair or upgrade facilities for example naming of sports complexes, adding that every time we talk about financials, it is important to look at the bottom line. The Chairman supported the idea and proposed to the administration to consider Dr. Niwes’ comments. The President explained that AIT was already taking such an approach by looking at funding for the AIT Library, sports facilities etc. adding that it is more difficult to garner similar funding for infrastructure upgrade since there is less attachment to this aspect, especially on the part of alumni. The President took the opportunity to inform the Board of the Ambassador of Bangladesh’s support to set up an Endowed Chair at AIT, in the name of the Founding Father of Bangladesh, to be supported by the Government of Bangladesh. He added that similarly, secondments from Pakistan are in the pipeline, an initiative, which is strongly supported by Ambassador of Pakistan, as well ongoing discussions with the Government of Indonesia. The President also informed the Board of the ongoing collaboration with the Government of India, and regular secondments of Indian faculty. In relation to the Endowed Chair, the Ambassador of Bangladesh added that it is envisaged that the Endowed Chair, would help work on core research areas of interest to Bangladesh. The Ambassador added that as a new member of the Board, she looked forward to working with trustees in innovative ways to look at funding opportunities with AIT, especially in the US and Europe.
