On 10 April 1912, the largest ship ever built at that time left England to sail to New York. It was name Titanic, and the people who built it believed it would never sink. Four and a half days later, the Titanic was lying at the bottom of the ocean and more than 1,500 passesengers were dead. In the middle of the night the ship hit and iceberg and just two hours and forty minutes later it disappeared into the ice-cold water of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The story of the Titanic and her first and only voyage has fascinated people ever since. The flim director James Cameron is one of these people. Using late-twentieth-century technology and a team of thousands, he brought the great ship to life on the big screen. An almost full-size model of the outside of the ship was built off the coast of Mexico. Hugs machines were used to tilt the model to show how the ship went down. Just before the Titanic sank, the front of the ship went under the water, causing the back to stand up almost vertically.

The inside of the ship was copied as carefully as the outside. Tables, chairs, lamps and carpets were just some of the things that were reproduced to match those on the original ship.

The Titanic sailed only once, but its story lives on. Millions of people have been to see James Cameron's Titanic, one of Hollywood's most successful flims ever.
