Conclusions
In this study, with high within-work environment response rates, no support was found
for environmental effects of work settings on distress, but there was evidence of
individual-level effects. While this may be specific to the population and work
environments studied, these results emphasize the need for studies investigating both
environmental and individual levels and the danger of generalizing conclusions from one
to the other. While rates of absenteeism and intention to leave were low, the results
suggest that distress may have mediated effects of work and that an intervention
enhancing job control might help to reduce job turnover
