Study support
Doing an undergraduate degree is exciting but also demanding. LUMS provides study support through both your department and the LUMS Effective Learning Team to help you find ways of studying that are effective for you.
Every undergraduate student in LUMS is allocated an academic tutor. This is a faculty member in your department with whom you can discuss your module choices and overall progress on your degree. In addition, you can also access academic support provided by the LUMS Effective Learning Team.
The LUMS Effective Learning Team
In addition to the support provided by your degree programme, you can access a range of activities and resources provided by the LUMS Effective Learning Team, who aim to help all LUMS students develop as independent and effective learners, and to achieve their full potential.
The team includes Student Learning Advisors and a number of peer student mentors, and works closely with departments and the subject librarian for LUMS to help you access any support you may need. The LUMS Effective Learning Team is based in B103 in LUMS (near LT10).
Effective Learning is available to all LUMS students, whether you are getting used to a new academic and cultural environment, coping with health or disability issues, or simply want to maximise your academic performance.
Learning support for undergraduate students
Rebecca Beaumont is the Student Learning Advisor for undergraduate students in LUMS. She runs
academic skills workshops to help you develop effective study strategies and practices
informal open-access drop-in sessions where you can discuss study issues
one-to-one support for students where appropriate
The Effecive Learning team manages a number of student mentoring schemes in LUMS, including
the Part I Transition Guide Scheme, a peer mentoring scheme aimed at international students
the academic support programme for direct entry students
the Maths and Stats Help Centre (MASH)
You are welcome to visit the LUMS Effective Learning Team to consult books and other resources on how to study effectively. Current students can also find resources for self-study and information about workshops on the LUMS Effective Learning Moodle site.
The Academic Writing Zone
LUMS students can book appointments at the Academic Writing Zone, which is a friendly place for all LUMS students to discuss academic writing issues one-to-one with a trained student writing mentor.
The team of twelve mentors is specially trained to help you develop effective strategies for approaching and managing the writing demands of your course. They will not help you with subject content, or proofread your work, but they will be able to discuss your assignments with you, and give you helpful feedback and advice on such matters as: how to get started on your assignment, how to look for good source material, the clarity of your writing, the different types of assignments, structure and style, referencing and citation, and much more.
All the sessions in the Academic Writing Zone are staffed by a Student Learning Advisor as well as student mentors.
The Maths and Stats Help Centre (MASH)
LUMS undergraduate students can drop in or book an appointment at the LUMS Maths & Stats Help (MASH) Centre, which is a friendly, supportive environment to get help with learning mathematics or statistics.
Drop in to the MASH Centre to work through practice materials on your own, with a tutor on hand to help if you get stuck, or book a one-to-one appointment to speak to a student mentor about Maths & Stats.
The mentors are specially trained to help you understand the underlying principles involved in solving maths problems. They will not help you with coursework assignments, but they will be able to work through other materials with you that will help you to understand the concepts you need.
