Many of The Center’s programs use a social groupwork methodology, which encourages participants to learn from each other and gradually assume increased responsibility for the group content and process. The Center’s approach to the development of groups in the ParentShip Program is informed by the writings of Kurland and Salmon (1998). The methodology allows leaders and members to go beyond a focus on individual develop- ment of group members, and to give marginalized parents and their children the opportunity to see and understand themselves as empowered agents of change in relation to larger entities such as the group, the community, and larger societal institutions. The purposeful use of activities within groups gives participants an opportunity to develop and share different talents, skills and facets of their personalities, enriching their own experience and the experience of the group (Northen, 1976)
