A basic form of promotion is simply to locate the collection separately from
the main collection. This is recommended by Rathe and Blankenship (81)
who found that students preferred a separate collection as it was more convenient.
In addition, it has been suggested that books in a discrete collection
receive “more exposure” (Dewan 56) and, consequently, higher use. Fourteen
(14) institutions with recreational reading collections (70%) had separate
collections although one interviewee strongly disagreed with Dewan, asserting
that it was not the role of the academic library to promote a separate
collection for reading for pleasure and that by integrating it, students could be
led into the rest of the collection thus generating more use for all the books
in the library rather than limiting the students to a browsing collection
